FAMILY INVOLVEMENT IN EDUCATION STRATEGIES AS PERCEIVED BY PARENTS, TEACHERS, AND SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS OF BURDEOS DISTRICT

Abstract

Recognizing parental involvement and that parents are responsible for raising their children are essential ingredients in building excellent schools and in determining what an excellent school looks like. A certain level of parents’ participation requires going far beyond traditional notions of how families connect to their children’s schools. The role of parents is no longer just that of supporters, but of collaborators and decision makers. Growing out strong connections between families and school staff can help build solid communities in which parents and families help shape the quality and nature of the school. This study examined the extent of family involvement in the schools of Burdeos District, their perceptions and attitudes towards family involvement, the varied involvement in education strategies such as parenting, communicating, volunteering work in school, providing support for student’s home learning, participationg in taking decisions in school, and collaborating with the community to encourage their partnership with school, the level of effectiveness of family involvement activities used in each involvement in education strategy and the indicators determining a strong family involvement in the school. Utilizing descriptive qualification approach, the comparative analysis was done by gathering data through the questionnaire. It was conducted in the schools of Burdeos district with 100 parents, 100 teachers and 17 school administrators as respondents. Frequency, percentage, weighted mean and analysis of variance were used in the interpretation of data. The perceptions and attitudes of the respondents towards family involvement in educations strategies are very affirmative. Family involvement has an impact in student learning .Parental involvement programs require principles of mutual trust. The school has an active PTA, and parents are enthusiastically participating in the school activities. Teacher’s attitudes towards parents’ involvement strategies influence parents to be involved in their children’s school. There is a strong family involvement in the schools of Burdeos District. Very often, the families are involved in the policy and decision making in the school and are actively participating in the school activities and events which only shows that parents, teachers and school administrators had a strong effective relationship.
