Completed2014

Abstract

This study sees the importance of instructional materials for Grade 8 Mathematics. The objective of the study is to develop and validate instructional materials for teaching Intermediate Algebra in the public secondary schools in Polillo Island. The study used the descriptive developmental type of research. The respondents of the study were 200 grade 8 students enrolled in the academic year 2014-2015 and from the five public secondary schools in Polillo Island, who used the module and evaluated its acceptability and usability. The data revealed that based on the concept matrix for teaching Intermediate Algebra, the topics Special Products and Factors are least mastered. The results of the study show that the developed module for Grade 8 Mathematics help low-performing pupils to do better in the different topics in Mathematics, especially the least-learned competencies. This makes the focused topics easier to understand and more interesting to students in Mathematics 8. It is also a considerable help for the teachers to achieve their aim of increasing the level of understanding of the learners particularly in Mathematics. There is a significant difference between the pre-test and posttest results of the students who participated in the study. The result of their post-test is significantly higher than the pre-test. This implies that the Grade 8 students who used the instructional materails in Grade 8 Mathematics performed better in the posttest.
