Completed2014

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of intervention strategies used by grade six teachers of Polillo group of Islands in the teaching of Mathematics. The study used descriptive method of research. The respondents of the study include all Grade VI Mathematics teachers from Polillo group of Islands. A survey questionnaire was utilized as the main data gathering instrument. The survey questionnaire focused mainly on the effectiveness of strategies. The result of the study reveals that among the six intervention strategies, cooperative learning activity, drills/ exercises and problem solving are regarded as the most effective way of helping Grade 6 pupils accelerate their mathematical numeracy. These strategies help teachers to enhance and accelerate the mathematical numeracy of their students. Using these teaching strategies, students work cooperatively and analyzed problems critically, actively participate in the discussion since the strategies employed were suited to the level of the learners. It was also revealed that there is a significant relationship between the strategies used by the teachers and the performance of pupils. It implies that an appropriate and effective teaching strategy will result in a better pupils’ performance. Hence, the intervention strategies used the mathematics teachers help improve the pupil’s academic performance in mathematics
