DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF LOCALIZED INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL IN MATHEMATICS FOR GRADE FIVE PUPILS OF PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN POLILLO DISTRICT, POLILLO, QUEZON

Completed2017

Abstract

This study sought to develop and evaluate a localized instructional material in Mathematics 5 based on the least learned competencies in Mathematics 5 for the third grading period. It also determined the acceptability level of the localized instructional material developed by the researcher in terms of instructional, content, and technical quality. This study used a descriptive survey research to elicit responses from the two groups of respondents. Stratified random sampling was used in choosing the 275 pupil respondents from the nineteen (19) public schools of Polillo District while complete enumeration was used to select the grade five teachers. Frequency, percentage, mean percentage score (MPS), ranking, and weighted mean were used in the treatment of the data. The findings revealed that majority of the teachers and pupil-respondents were female. The teachers’ mean age is 38.2. Most of them were married and BSE Mathematics graduate. There were nine (9) least learned competencies based on the diagnostic test for school year 2016- 2017. The developed localized instructional material was rated best by the teachers and pupilrespondents in terms of instructional, content, and technical quality. It was perceived as attractive and colorful and makes the lessons more interesting. It also developed the critical thinking of the pupils and improved the least learned competencies in Mathematics. The objectives of the lesson were very much measurable and attainable. In general, the developed localized instructional material is an acceptable instructional material for teaching Grade V Mathematics in the Third Grading Period as it obtained a positive feedback from the teachers and pupils. They agreed that the localized instructional materials can enhance the least learned competencies in Mathematics V and ready for pilot testing or can be used in Grade 5 Mathematics class in the different schools of Polillo District. Teachers may also pursue and continue to use the localized instructional materials in teaching and learning not only in Mathematics but also in other subjects in K to 12 curriculum in which lessons can be incorporated.
