THE USE OF MOTHER TONGUE- BASED MULTILINGUAL EDUCATION IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS IN THE PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN POLILLO DISTRICT

Abstract

The study investigated the use of Mother Tongue Based- Multilingual Education (MTB- MLE) in teaching Mathematics in the public elementary schools in Polillo District. Specifically, it investigated on the demographic profile of the teachers in terms of age, sex, educational qualifications, and length of service. This also relates the significant difference of the respondents according to their demographic profile with regard to the level of commitment, the actions that teachers in Polillo District undertake in using Mother Tongue Based- Multilingual Education in teaching Mathematics and success indicators as identified by the teachers with regard to planning and organizing; implementing; monitoring; and evaluating. The researcher used questionnaire for the data gathering. The respondents of this study are 87 primary teachers from public elementary schools in Polillo District. The data were gathered, tabulated, analyzed and presented using statistical measures including percentage distribution, weighted mean, t-test and ANOVA. The result of the study revealed that majority of the respondents are 30-39 years old, female, married, with master’s degree and 11 years and above in the service. Teachers almost always undertook majority of the action indicators to use MTB-MLE in teaching mathematics however, some teachers failed in assisting in developing skillbooks of the local language for Mathematics using MTB-MLE. There was no significant difference when respondents are grouped according to demographic profile on their level of commitment in using MTB-MLE in teaching mathematics.
