THE PERCEIVED IMPACT OF SCHOOL CULTURE ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF GRADE 10 STUDENTS OF BURDEOS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the perceived impact of school culture on the academic performance of Grade 10 students of Burdeos National High school for the SY 2017-2018. The respondents of the study were the selected (250) Grade 10 students for the SY 2017- 2018, and selected (50) parents/ guardians and selected (15) Grade 10 teachers of Burdeos National High School. Descriptive-survey method of research was used in this study to describe the school culture of Burdeos National Highschool and to find out the significant difference among the students, the parents/guardians and parents’ perception of school culture in terms of artifacts and practices, espoused values and assumptions. Survey questionnaire and interview was the main data gathering instrument of this study. Frequency /Percentage Distribution, Spearman Rho Coefficient, and ANOVA were used as statistical treatment. The findings of the study revealed that majority of the student-respondents belonged to the ages ranging from 14-16 years old, mostly female with an academic rating of 86-90. As for the parents/guardians respondents, most were in the age of 31-40 years old, female and high school graduate. Majority of the teachers-respondents were 41- 50 years old, mostly female with a baccalaureate degree. Results also revealed that artifacts and practices, espoused values and assumption are often observed by the students, parents/guardians and teachers of Burdeos National High School. Students were achieving academically, students’ socialization and participation was socially influenced by their surroundings and students’ attendance was fluctuating. There is a significant difference among students, parents/guardians and teachers perceptions on the school culture in terms of artifacts and practices, espoused values and assumptions and there is a significant difference between the school culture and the student academic performance. The results of the study served as the bases for designing an action and school activities to enhance the impact of school culture on the academic achievement of the students.
