DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS FOR STRUGGLING READERS AMONG GRADE TWO PUPILS OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN LUCENA WEST DISTRICT

Abstract

This study focused on developing and validating an instructional material that is K-12 aligned for struggling readers of Grade 2. The study employed research and development approach because it sought to find out generalization about reading experiences through the use of reading workbook. It utilized 50 public grade two teachers who conducted remedial reading classes in the West District of the Division of Lucena City. A pre-test was used to diagnose the non/struggling readers in the class and posttest to evaluate the acceptability and validity of the booklet while the validation form was used to find out its level of validity and acceptability to teachers who served as respondents of the study. T-test was used to check the significant difference between the performance of the students before and after the use of the instructional materials. Results revealed that the developed instructional materials for struggling readers for Grade Two is very much valid in terms of instructional goals, topics, learning activities, and evaluative measures. The respondents agreed that the workbook is highly acceptable in terms of sequence, format and usability while it is acceptable in terms of content, mechanics or strategies used in the material and appeal to the target user. Likewise, there’ s a significant difference between the performance in the pre-reading and post-reading assessments, which means the developed instructional materials for struggling readers was effective in enhancing reading skills among grade two pupils of Lucena West District.
