FACTORS AFFECTING THE LEVEL OF INTEREST AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SCIENCE OF INTERMEDIATE PUPILS OF PATNANUNGAN DISTRICT

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the factors affecting the level of interest and academic performance in Science of intermediate pupils of Patnanungan District. The respondents of the study were 30 intermediate teachers and 150 intermediate pupils of Patnanungan District. Descriptive method of research was employed in order to determine the factors that affect the level of interest of intermediate pupils of Patnanungan District. To determine the profile of the respondents in terms of the selected variables, the frequency percentage distribution was used. To find out the factors affecting the level of interest in Science of intermediate pupils, with respect to the differences, the weighted mean was used. To find out the academic performance in Science of intermediate pupils, mean and standard deviation was applied. And to find out if there is a significant relationship between the perceived extent of the factors affecting the level of interest of pupils in science and their academic performance, correlation analysis was applied. The study revealed that most of the respondents are female with masters' units. And among the intermediate pupils, Grade VI pupils performed well in Science-based from their grades in 1st and 2nd grading periods. The level of the pupil – respondents are in the Proficient Level. The study also revealed that there is no significant relationship between the level of interest and academic performance. However, a significant correlation was revealed for the relationship between Motivational Techniques and Academic Performance in Science of Intermediate Pupils. These finding implied that teacher's motivational techniques are contributing factors on how the student performed in their academics. Teachers' teaching strategies, laboratory equipment, and apparatuses and motivational techniques are factors that affect the level of interest of the pupils. Based on the results, an action plan was made to enhance the level of interest in Science of the pupils.
