GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF AN ISLAND MUNICIPALITY AND ITS IMPLICATIONS TO LEADERSHIP PERFORMANCE AND DEVELOPMENT OF A SCHOOL DISTRICT

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of geographical location of Jomalig Island and its implications to school leadership performance and development of Jomalig District. It also aimed to investigate the factors influencing the leadership performance and development of mentors and administrators in Jomalig District; to evaluate and assess the impact of school location on the academic performance of Jomalig District Schools; to investigate any relationship between school location and leadership performance of school heads and principal. Quantitative descriptive survey research was used to conduct an investigation of phenomenon.
Findings of this study revealed that teachers suffer due to maximum distance travelled in acquiring trainings and seminars in teaching in other places outside the island. They lack access to student health care in medical and dental facilities which result to absenteeism and malnutrition among children and students in Jomalig District. There is high risk in transportation during the months of September to January caused by strong sea surges and bad weather condition resulting to delay and interruption of reports, outputs, and official business of school heads and supervisor. However, school heads in Jomalig District identify the leadership potential of teachers early and support their career development by allowing them to enroll masteral courses and ongoing educational research. There is no significant difference between the perceptions of school heads and teachers on the challenges encountered relative to geographical location of Jomalig District. There is a significant difference between their perceptions on the strategies used to address the challenges encountered relative to the geographical location of Jomalig District.
Schools should maintain the “Gulayan sa Paaralan” and encourage every parent to have a vegetable garden in their backyard to lessen the malnutrition of the students in Jomalig District.
