Factors Causing Writer's Block among 4th year students of Gulang-Gulang National High School SY 2013-2014: A Basis for Creating an Intevention Program.

Abstract

This study was conducted for the purpose of discovering the factors that cause writer’s block among 4th year students of Gulang-Gulang National High School and to develop an Intervention Program which was derived from the findings, to prevent such occurrences of Writer’s block. The factors were categorized into 7 categories namely, Topic Factors; Complexity; Environmental, Physical and Time Related Factors; Psychological and Emotional Factors; Premature Editing and Attitude towards Writing; Mechanics and Word Choice, and Blocking as the main indicator of Writer’s block. The exploratory design of research was utilized, purposive sampling was used for selecting the respondents and statistical treatments were applied to interpret the data gathered. Base from the data gathered, it was found out the respondents were Female belonging to the age bracket of 15-16 with a dominant average of 87-89. Magazines were their most preferred reading material, while Writing Diaries and Stories were the most interesting writing activities for the respondents. Most of them write a lot of things about the given topic when it is interesting to them and in terms of Complexity, most of them think that their writing is good but it is difficult for them to write essays on books and articles which are very complex. Majority of them respondents always find it hard to write when they are sick or uncomfortable, and they always have trouble writing when the environment is noisy. The students also become more inspired when someone gives comments on their outputs and in terms of their Attitude towards writing, most of them always like the opportunity to express their ideas in writing. Based from the students’ perceptions, each sentence they write has to be just right before they will go on to the next. Most of the students were having trouble writing because they are afraid that their grammar might be wrong and they were also having a hard to time to write because they can’t choose the exact words that best describe what they want to express. They also sit for hours, unable write a thing which indicates Blocking, and majority estimated the frequency of their Blocking with “Sometimes”. Based from the data gathered, a 10-week Intervention Program was created comprising of the factors which needs to be developed and enhanced, and to make an action regarding the situations which needs to be addressed.
