Evaluation of the Related Learning Experience (RLE) as Training Program for Student Nurses: Input to Student Nurses Continuing Training Design

Completed2012

Abstract

The study assessed and analysed the related learning experience as training program provided to student nurses in an affiliating agency. This served as a basis in developing a continuing training design for student nurses. Descriptive evaluative method was utilized. Data were gathered from a sample of 130 Level IV student nurses, 5 clinical instructors, and 12 nursing education administrators. Three kinds of research instruments were used: a self-devised questionnaire, an 80- item criterion referenced test; and a focus discussion guide. Frequency and percentage, weighted arithmetic mean, Kendall's coefficient of concordance, and t-test for dependent samples were used in the statistical treatment of data. Findings showed that the administrators and clinical instructor respondents were mostly females, ranging from late adolescent to middle adults, having fair to exemplary teaching experience, very young in administering the College and specialists in various fields of nursing. They expected to the fullest extent the availability of all clinical facilities and resources and the realisation of instructional standards as mandated by the CHED. Likewise, the Related Learning Experience s a training program has been relevant and effective in preparing the student nurses for their professional practice. Specifically, the knowledge, skills and attitudes of student nurses improved to the fullest extent except in the areas of communication, collaboration and teamwork, management of resources and environment, research, analysis of comprehensive client assessment data, and safe administration of medications. The lack of student area, hospital location, inadequate opportunities to render quality health care services, and cost of affiliations were the common problems encountered by the student nurses and clinical instructors during their RLE in Hospital X. A significant disagreement was evident regarding the problems encountered by clinical instructors and student nurses during their RLE.
