Completed2016

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the problems experienced by jail officers in supervising inmates at the Quezon Provincial Jail. A descriptive survey type of research was used to gather pertinent facts and data for the study. A total of 50 jail officers and personnel were purposively chosen for the study. Frequency, percentage, weighted mean and ranking were used in the statistical analysis. Findings revealed that the most common violations committed by the inmates where engaging in a fraternity or gang, fabricating deadly weapons, and bringing contraband inside the jail. Common behavioral problems include the inmates’ violent behavior, tendency to vandalize and create damages to jail property, making trouble inside the jail because of their ire and anger. The strategies they used in managing inmates include the installation of CCTV, conduct of inspections and searches of the contrabands in the quarters, and regular checkup of the window and door grills. It is also recommended that the counseling program be strengthened through the help of civic organizations, educational institutions, psychologist or psychiatrists in order to avoid and lessen the violent behavior of the inmates. Vandal resistant CCTV camera should also be installed in the cells so that the inmates’ activities could be monitored.
