Completed2015

Abstract

This descriptive study aimed to determine the level of compliance of the district and provincial jails on the safety measures and housekeeping. A self-made questionnaire was used in gathering data among selected jail officers. Based on the findings, seminars and trainings are conducted every year for enhancement of jail officers and feedback is given to the jail officers’ trainee. In terms of peace and order and team building among inmates, roving guard every hour and intensive security on deadly weapons and lecture for livelihood are provided. In terms of housekeeping, CCTV cameras are located in different areas and indoor and outdoor facilities are kept clean. To maintain a safe environment, relatives are asked to sign in log books for visitors and there is limitation of time given to them. Meanwhile, the problems include deadly weapons intentionally entering in the jail, lack of modern technology devices to protect inmates and prison congestion, and overcrowded inmates in the jail. It is recommended that jail officers must provide activities or programs such as family day and team building that involve the family or friends of the inmates to help strengthen family ties and lessen problems in the jail. Inmates should abide with the jail rules to avoid problems especially to secure their safety inside the jail.
