MACHO: AN ANALYSIS ON THE CONCEPT OF MASCULINITY IN PHILIPPINE LITERATURE IN ENGLISH
Area of Research
Abstract
This study analyzed Philippine literatures in English language linguistically and the concept of masculinity by evaluating their portrayal of male characters. With the use of M.A.K Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar, literatures were deconstructed into clauses and phrases, and the result shows that dependent clauses and verb phrases were dominant in their narratives. In terms of the concept of masculinity, with Connel’s masculinity theory, the subjects interpreted the the portrayal of men conforming to heteronormativity or hegemonic masculinity. The coded evaluation of the literatures also revealed a hegemonic portrayal to masculinity, and this supported the subejct’s interpretations. This study referred to reader-response criticism to extract perceptions from the subjects and also other reaction that correspond to the transactional model saying the meaning of the text can not be separated from its reader.
