Perceived Influence of Social Media to the Psychological Well-Being of Young Adolescents with Inferiority Complex

Abstract

This study focused on investigating the perceived influence of social media to the psychological well-being of young adolescents identified with inferiority complex. It used the descriptive type of research wherein survey questionnaire and inferiority test were made to gather such information needed in this study. The study was conducted in International School for Better Beginnings in Lucena City. There were a total of 54 purposively selected students from different grade levels and sections who passed the first test and suited to be the respondents of the study. There was a second survey questionnaire used to answer the sub-problems in this study. Frequency, Percentage, Weighted mean, and T-Test were used in statistical analysis. According to the result, majority of the respondents are using Facebook almost every day. Based on their responses, it is found that social media is for entertainment, for gathering information, to stay connected and be updated, and so on. Also, it reveals that these various forms of social media such as Facebook, is positively influencing the psychological well-being of these young adolescents identified with inferiority complex. Among the six dimension of Ryff’s Psychological Well-being, there is only one dimension found to be neutral which is the Self-acceptance, and the rest founded agree. In this study, it is concluded that social media positively influence the goals in life, and sense of directedness of these young adolescents. Also, it is found that social media allows them to continue developing and sees improvement on their selves. It influence their self-determination and independence, helps to improve their sense of competence and let them make effective use of surrounding opportunities. These various forms of social media provides the young adolescents a warm, trusting, friendly and satisfying relationship with other people. The result of this study supports some of the early research that social media is useful in our everyday life, yet, people especially these young adolescents who are more exposed on social media must be aware of the fact that all things have its own disadvantages that should consider. Institutions such as universities, colleges and other schools is likely to benefit and gain something about social media and psychological well-being that will be convenient in enriching their programs and activities which supports and helps their students’ development.
