Mom What's Kabit: Implications of Infidelity-Themed Primetime Shows on Adolescents' Moral and Psychological Well Being

Abstract

This study focused on determining influence and implications of infidelity-themed primetime shows on adolescents’ moral and psychological well-being. It employed the qualitative research design, specifically utilizing content analysis with the use of individual interview as a method that answered the study’s statement of the problem. The study was conducted in Lucena City, specifically inside Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation. There were a total of 8 selected college students that frequently watch infidelity-themed primetime shows. Analysis of the results reveals that adolescents watch these type of shows out of curiosity and actually enjoy them. Moreover, their views on marriage is unchanged and the respondents have clearly discussed their point of view for the shows in terms of socially accepted norms and self-accepted norms. Furthermore, by watching such tv shows, they use it as a learning tool from their past experiences and for similar future situations. The study revealed that adolescents go on watching tv shows like this because they can relate to it and they are aware that this kind of phenomenon happens in real life. The respondents involved were old enough to understand the why situations from the tv show arises. In the matter of their psychological well-being, the shows portrays situations that challenges the adolescents on how they are going to react and cope with situations like it. The shows also prepares them for future situations that might be similar to what is happening to the characters in the shows.
