The Influence of Helicopter Parenting to Problem Solving, Decision-Making, and Psychological Well- Being of College Students

Abstract

This study focused on analyzing the influence of helicopter parenting to problem solving, decision-making, and psychological well-being of college students. It employed the descriptive research design wherein survey and case studies were used. The study was conducted in Lucena City, specifically in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation, Dalubhasaan ng Lungsod ng Lucena, and Calayan Educational Foundation, Inc. There were a total of 86 respondents who were purposively selected. Frequency, weighted mean were used in the statistical analysis while thematic analysis was used for the analytical framework. Analysis of the results reveals that college students perceptions about helicopter parenting involved overprotecting their children. In addition, the influence of helicopter parents to the college students’ problems solving are as follows. When college students have problems, their parents are participative, suggesting, and complicating. Meanwhile, when college students decide on what action to take that is according with their parents’ wishes, they are resisting, noncompliant, and they get distressed. Subsequently, their psychological well-being were measured in terms of six dimensions. In terms of self-acceptance, college students are pleased with how things have turned out so far with their lives. In terms of environmental mastery, college students perceive themselves being great at managing their daily tasks.. In terms of purpose in life, they have felt that they have not yet done all there is to do in their lives. In terms of personal growth, college students indicated that they do not fully depend on their parents for guidance. In terms of positive relations with others, college students have a caring attitude toward other people. In terms of autonomy, they have confidence in their own opinion. There is a significant influence of helicopter parenting to the college students’ problem solving, decision-making, and psychological well-being.
