Selfie Activities and its Implication on the Level of Self-Esteem of Selected Instagram Users

Abstract
This research studied the selfie activities and its implications on the level of self-esteem of selected Instagram users. Also, it presented the perceived level of satisfaction of the respondents when they are engaged in selfie activities, the relationship between their level of self-esteem and the estimated number of likes that they usually get per post of their selfie. Moreover, the common responses of the respondents’ family in this matter are also identified, more so the implications of selfie activities and usage of Instagram to their behavior.
Furthermore, selfie and usage of social networking sites such as Instagram is a popular trend right now especially to the younger generations. This is why this study is very timely to be able to know and understand what keeps them into continuously using these.
One hundred respondents have been needed for this study to answer the survey questionnaires prepared by the researcher and another ten respondents were needed for the interview part. The interview was recorded and then transcribed. The transcription was then
categorized to further evaluate and analyzed along with the quantitative data that have been gathered.
The results revealed that majority of the respondents feel satisfied whenever they are engaged in selfie activities especially when someone likes their selfie. Moreover, the common responses of the respondents’ family especially the parents towards their usage of Instagram and selfie activities are categorized as unawareness; restricting; modernized/adapting; awareness/ attentive; incurious and; supportive. Meanwhile, the behavioral implications of the respondents’ exposure to Instagram and selfie activities are: being overly active/ addiction; being insecure; being too conscious/ vain; being recognized/ admired; being confident and; being friendly.
Subsequently, the study used the Rosenberg’s Self-esteem Scale to determine the level of self-esteem of the respondents. The results showed that majority of the respondents have a normal level of self-esteem. Moreover, it was also found out that their self-esteem was not being affected even if they have received few likes in their selfie photo that was being posted in the Instagram.
