Gender Equality in Uniform: Assessing the Effects of Gender in the Work Performance of Female Uniformed Personne

Completed2024

Abstract

Gender equality in female uniformed personnel involves pursuing equal treatment and opportunities for women in these fields, challenging preconceived notions and expectations often tied to gender. This aim can have a positive impact on their workplace experiences, promoting increased confidence, reducing self-doubt, and fostering a greater sense of adequacy. With this, the study explored how females in uniformed professions in Tri-Bureau (Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology) perceived and experienced gender issues and how these experiences affected their work performance. A quantitative approach was employed, with respondents of sixty-two (62) female uniformed personnel from a Tri-Bureau in Lucena City. The study utilized a descriptive research method. The sampling technique used was Quota Sampling. Incorporating Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5: Gender Equality into the discussion enhances the significance of addressing stereotyping among female uniformed personnel. SDG 5 aims to eliminate discrimination against women and girls, ensuring their full participation and equal opportunities in leadership and decision-making. This aligns closely with the study’s findings, highlighting female uniformed personnel face barriers due to entrenched gender issues. The researchers recommend different programs such as workshops and infographic creation. This resonates with SDG 5's call for reforms to give women equal rights to economic resources and workplace opportunities. Institutionalizing fair evaluation systems ensures meritocracy and reduces subjective biases against female personnel. The study shed light upon the experiences of the female uniformed personnel, unveiling the gender issues about work-life balance and family obligations as the biggest challenges. However, many believe that talent and hard work help earn the promotion. The respondents felt confident but faced a lack of mentorship and ongoing negative attitudes. The researchers recommended comprehensive programs to fight gender issues and educate personnel about gender equality and respect, fostering reflection and collaboration. They demand uniform performance assessment techniques to minimize discrimination and constant analysis of the data related to female employees’ performance.
