Evaluating Waste Management Strategies: Opportunities for Collaborative Community Engagement
Area of Research
Abstract
Solid waste encompasses a variety of discarded materials resulting from human
activities. The primary purpose of this study is to enhance collaborative community
engagement in waste management strategies that lead to achieving sustainable
development goals that ensure the health and well-being of everyone, improve sanitation in
the environment, and make humans and cities safe and sustainable. Waste management is a
complex issue that requires an appropriate approach. With this, a descriptive method was
employed to analyze solutions and conditions in the selected barangay that generates the
highest waste per day, which is the Barangay Gulang-Gulang in Lucena City. The
researchers used a convenience sampling technique in distribution to 380 respondents from
the community. The researchers recommend the proposed program “EcoSolution: For
Sustainable Community” to engage the community and encourage them to adopt responsible
waste management practices, especially the composting of organic waste, recycling
programs, waste reduction strategy, and gain some knowledge about the importance and
function of Material Recovery Facility because according to the findings of the study, there
are common waste management strategies implemented in the locale based on the observation of the respondents such as waste segregation, clean-up drive campaigns and regular collection schedule of waste that is why the researchers proposed a program which requires the involvement of barangay and members of the community for the better
development of the community to have sustainable development.
