Abstract

Pedestrian safety significantly impacts community well-being, affecting health, productivity, and quality of life. This study examined pedestrian safety in Barangay Ilayang Iyam, Lucena City, Philippines, Comparing its status to other Asean regions and drawing insights from lower fatality rates in Europe. Aligning local safety initiatives with international commitments such as the Sustainable Development Goals, the study aims to offer practical recommendations for infrastructure improvements and awareness campaigns. Using Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory, Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior, and the Safe System Approach, the study evaluated how infrastructure influences pedestrian safety, awareness, and behavior. Comprehensive data collection methods, including surveys, interviews, and field observations, assess current infrastructure, resident awareness, and safety behaviors were done. The study identified key deficiencies in pedestrian infrastructure, suggested targeted improvements, and aimed to increase safety awareness among residents, ultimately reducing pedestrian accidents. By integrating quantitative and qualitative data, the research provides a holistic understanding of pedestrian safety in Barangay settings, contributing to safer, pedestrian-friendly communities and serving as a model for similar initiatives in other areas. The findings highlight the importance of well-designed infrastructure and effective educational campaigns, emphasizing the need for ongoing evaluation and improvement to ensure long-term pedestrian safety.
