CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED BY LUCENA DISTRICT JAIL OFFICERS IN MANAGING PERSONS DEPRIVED OF LIBERTY’S BEHAVIOR

Completed2025

Abstract

This study examined the challenges faced by Lucena City Jail officers in managing the behavior of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs). Using a purposive sampling method, insights were gathered from fifty-two (52) jail officers to identify the factors influencing PDL behavior and the strategies used to address these challenges. Data analysis revealed that the lack of family support, limited access to legal representation, and inadequate mental health services were significant factors impacting PDL behavior. Additionally, the overall jail environment and culture were found to play a critical role in either exacerbating or alleviating tensions among PDLs. Gang affiliations and the logistical challenges of inmate transportation further contributed to the complexity of maintaining order and ensuring safety. The study highlights the need for improved family support systems, better mental health services, and a more positive jail environment to foster rehabilitative efforts. The findings suggest that addressing these issues can create a safer, more supportive atmosphere for both officers and PDLs, contributing to better overall jail management and rehabilitation outcomes.
