THE IMPACT OF BARANGAY PEACEKEEPING ON PUBLIC SAFETY: AN EVALUATION OF EFFECTIVENESS

Completed2025

Abstract

This study assesses the level of effectiveness of the Barangay Tanods in relation to public safety as perceived by the residents of San Francisco, Quezon. Specifically, the study prioritized identifying the demographics of the respondents, identifying the perceived roles of barangay tanods, evaluating their effectiveness in the many aspects of their responsibilities, and assessing the satisfaction of the residents with the activities of barangay tanods. The barangay tanods are efficient tools for upholding peace and order at the barangay level. It addresses some of the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations, namely SDG 11-Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 16- Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. While previous research has focused on public safety and peacekeeping in urban areas or at a national level, limited attention has been given to the experiences and perceptions of residents in smaller, rural communities. This study addresses this gap by examining how residents in selected barangays view the barangay tanods’ efficacy in improving public safety. The researchers employed the descriptive quantitative approach and collected data from the target group using a survey questionnaire. The study found that the women and the 37- year-old residents are among the most prevailing demographics in the locale. Moreover, it was found that the residents perceive the barangay tanods to be responsible for patrolling and responding to disasters. The barangay tanods are generally found to be effective in their duties, but there is a need for better training to improve their capacity and capabilities.
