AN ANALYSIS OF THE LEVEL OF COMPLIANCE OF JEEPNEY DRIVERS ON THE TRAFFIC LAWS AND REGULATIONS IN LUCENA CITY
Area of Research
Abstract
This paper assessed jeepney drivers' compliance with the road signs and
attempted to establish what factors influence or impact this kind of compliance. More so,
this study analyzed the compliance of jeepney drivers in Lucena City with traffic laws
and regulations, focusing on adherence to road signs. It was done through observation,
identifying factors influencing driver behavior, and determining common violations like
entering one-way streets or failing to load/unload passengers properly. Building on
previous studies highlighting effective traffic signs like "No Entry" and "Speed Limit"
signs this analysis contributes insights for policymakers seeking to enhance road safety
measures by addressing gaps in enforcement. Findings suggest that jeepney drivers
and traffic enforcers generally comply with traffic rules and regulations, though enforcers
exhibit a slightly higher level of compliance. While both groups recognize the importance
of following traffic laws, certain areas—like avoiding cellphone use while driving and
interpreting traffic signs—present challenges, especially for drivers. Traffic enforcers
appear to have a better understanding and adherence to traffic rules, which aligns with
their role in enforcing these regulations. The frequency of these violations is lower than
expected, suggesting that the majority of drivers are conscious of the risks and avoid
such behaviors. Hence, the researchers proposed a program plan for jeepney drivers
and commuters on their compliance with the traffic rules.
