Exploring the Effectiveness of On-The-Job Training in Enhancing Skills Among Criminology Students

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of On-the-Job Training (OJT) in enhancing the skills and knowledge of criminology students, particularly in the context of real-world law enforcement settings. The study used a quantitative approach with a descriptive research design, involving one hundred and sixty (160) fourth-year criminology students from Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation (MSEUF) during the academic year 2023-2024. Data were collected from 160 criminology students during the Academic Year 2024-2025, both before and after their participation in OJT. Purposive sampling was employed in choosing the respondents. Self-constructed questionnaire was used as the main research instrument of this study. Survey questionnaires were distributed and analyzed to gather data. Findings revealed that OJT significantly contributed to students' professional development by improving their practical skills, particularly in communication skills ranked highest, reinforcing the importance of clear and professional interaction in law enforcement. However, several challenges, including time management and financial constraints, were identified as barriers to optimal skills development. It was also found that the a need for enhanced support systems, better mentorship, and improved resource allocation to maximize the OJT experience. The findings provide recommendations for law enforcement agencies, educators, and policymakers to strengthen community involvement initiatives and better prepare students for future careers in law enforcement and criminal justice.
