From Challenges to Solutions: Enhancing Fish Farming in ALQUEREZ

Completed2024

Abstract

This study looked at the challenges and strategies among fish farmers in Alquerez, Quezon, to improve their livelihood. In doing so, the research pointed to critical problems such as the limitation of capital, few opportunities to access modern technologies, inefficient production systems, and inadequate government support. Such issues significantly influence the productivity and social and economic well-being of fish farming households. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed, sampling a total of 50 selected respondents gathered using survey questionnaires. The findings highlight these program areas, such as FFLEP, which enhances farmers' abilities to overcome challenges that occur. FFLEP gives financial assistance, modernized technologies, infrastructure enhancement, and specialized training for enhanced productivity, cost-cutting, and sustainability in the long run. Further, the study cited Presidential Assistance for Farmers, Fisherfolks, and Other Families, a national program implemented under President Marcos, Jr. While PAFFF provides instant funds to fish farmers all over the Philippines, including Alquerez, it has limitations in terms of addressing the region-specific needs of the fish farming community. The ?10,000 provided by PAFFF is helpful but does not address unique challenges in terms of access to modern technology, infrastructure, and comprehensive capacity- building. The study highlighted the importance of integrated support systems and targeted interventions-such as FFLEP- to address these gaps. Collaborative efforts between national programs like PAFFF and more localized initiatives like FFLEP are crucial for overcoming the challenges faced by farmers and ensuring the sustainable development of fish farming communities. The study emphasized the need for continued government and community collaboration to enhance fish farmers' livelihoods and secure the long-term sustainability of the aquaculture sector in Alquerez.
