SEAFARERS AWARENESS ON CYBERSECURITY NEEDS: A BASIS FOR PROPOSED CYBERSECURITY TRAINING SEMINAR
Area of Research
Abstract
Given the growing dependence on digital technologies in the maritime industry, it has become
more exposed to threats related to cybersecurity. The present study aimed to analyze the existing
level of cybersecurity awareness among seafarers who have graduated from Manuel S. Enverga
University Foundation and provide insights into whether their current training programs function
correctly. The research used a qualitative approach and descriptive data analysis collected by
interviewing three managerial officers. Purposive sampling was applied. Specifically, the study
highlighted four themes: the dominance of younger seafarers working in managerial positions;
adopting a resilient cyber security culture was critical to success; difficulties encountered with
crucial aspects of cyber practice; and experiencing good levels of preparedness for dealing better
with cyber instances. It also drew attention to deficiencies in standard foundational training and
the importance of continually enhancing cybersecurity processes. The maritime industry urgently
requires improved cybersecurity training and awareness efforts. The proposed seminar would be
capable of filling in these gaps while delivering focused education and promoting a cybersecurity savvy culture among maritime professionals.
