Level of Awareness of Maritime Students on Safety and Accident Prevention: Basis for Safety Mitigation Plan

Completed2024

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the level of awareness of maritime students about safety and accident prevention and to come up with a safety mitigation plan. The scope of the study was limited to Maritime students enrolled at Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation, during the School Year 2023-2024. The research employed quantitative research using a self-made questionnaire. A total of one hundred (100) students were the respondents of this study using purposive sampling. Results showed that most students are highly aware of safety and accident prevention. In terms of having a safe workplace, safe working practices, and personal safety, the respondents are highly mindful as well, that training and educating themselves are necessary to equip them on how to prevent accidents and be safe in the workplace. Although they are aware of the procedures on safety and accident prevention, they still encounter challenges in applying those procedures because sometimes they are not focused on the implementation. With this, they came up with a possible solution that there should be a set of rules and guidelines that will remind them to comply with those safety practices diligently. A safety mitigation plan was proposed in order to practice the safety procedures that will promote a safe workplace and personal safety habits.
