"Revitalizing Minor Bridges: A Retrofitting and BERDE Green Building Design of Banyuhay Pedestrian Bridge in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation”
Area of Research
Abstract
The Banyuhay bridge due to time suffers structural deterioration which affects the pedestrian who uses the bridge .This research study explores the improvement and preservation of the Banyuhay bridge, which serves as one of the historical properties of Manuel S. Enverga University, through retrofitting in accordance with BERDE green building standard. The results of the pre-survey conducted on four hundred (400) respondents shows that there is a problem being encountered by those who are passing in the Banyuhay bridge like experiencing minor accidents because of exposed iron rods and nails on the floor and poor traffic flow due to its narrow width.
The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach. Technological research is used by the researchers in dealing with engineering and technical problems to improve existing Banyuhay bridge of the Banyuhay bridge's location through soil testing to determine the soil's composition, stability, and load-bearing capacity and undergo a computation of the total load of the existing structure and comparing it with the load computation of the new designed bridge to secure that the existing footings, columns and beams can carry the proposed improvement.
The researchers prepared the technical specifications, bill of materials and cost estimate, program of works and detailed plans and drawings in accordance with different standards like National Building Code of the Philippines (NBCP), National Structural Codes of the Philippines 2015 (NSCP 2015), ASTM and Berde rating system criteria of green building design.
