Re-Entry into the Community: Societies' View in Their Post-Prison Life

Completed2023

Abstract

Ex-PDLs are considered to have received a lifetme conviction. They are subjected to neglect and restriction because most people stigmatize those who were sent to prison for persistent criminal behavior. With simple random sampling, a representative sample of 378 respondents form Barangay Cotta, Lucena City, gave their views about their perception towards returning individuals, their social connectedness, as well as their various challenges in socializing with an ex-offender reintegrating into their community. A quantitative method was used to quantify the findings of the study. the researchers used the descriptive form to show and analyze the possible acquired data. The results showed a positive community perception towards reintegration, with acceptance and support being crucial for effective socialization. However, respondents still perceived a lack of trust in ex-PDLs' genuine reformation. Family and community support were seen as essential for ex-PDLs' reintegration and rehabilitation. Despite a positive view of the community, ex-PDLs often engage negatively with the community, indicating a need for improved interactions. Relatively, to facilitate the successful reintegration of returning individuals into the community, it is recommended that community transitional support agencies ensure that the public has a clear concept of what ex-PDLs' reintegration means and how it connects to individual reformation in their communities. They must educate communities and share values about the need for ex-PDLs' reformation. Thus. the researchers recommend a public awareness campaign as a support system program. An information campaign to create awareness could rely on the distribution of flyers, posters, brochures, and other materials.
