A Concrete Mixture Design utilizing Carbonized Corn Cob (CCC) and Fly Ash as partial replacements to Fine Aggregates and Cement
Area of Research
Abstract
The demand for sustainable building materials has increased exponentially in recent years due to the necessity for the construction industry to minimize its impact on the environment and maximize its use of resources . In response, this study offers an alternative approach for concrete mixture its use of resources. In response, this study offers an alternative approach for concrete mixture formulation by partially substituting carbonized corn cob (CCC) nad fly ash for cement and fine aggregates, respectively. The durability, mechanical and environmental properties of the developed concrete mixture were comprehensively investigated as part of the research methodology, Series of laboratory tests were performed to evaluate the workability, compressive strength, flexural strength and durability performance of fresh and hardened properties of concrete under various exposure conditions. Results indicated that the incorporation of CCC and fly ash produced considerable improvements in both mechanical and environmental performance characteristics of the concrete. Only Mixture 1 with 10% CCC and Mixture 2 with 20% CCC and 20% FA replacement achieved 24MPa (3480 psi) and 19.1 MPa (2770) respectively after 28 days of curing, meeting the standards for Class A strength. Feasibility and efficacy of integrating CCC and fly ash as sustainable alternatives to conventional cement and fine aggregates in concrete mixtures was noted. Environmental impact of building projects was lesened and performance of concrete building was enhanced. Utilization of abundant and sustainable materials addressed and environmental concerns as well as enhanced the structural integrity and performance of the designed concrete mixture
