Voices at Sea: Exploring the Experiences, Challenges, and Opportunities of Women Seafarers in the Cruise Industry

This study examines the unique challenges faced by women in the cruise industry, including perceptions of physically demanding roles and extend periods away from home. It emphasizes the need for diversity initiatives, mentorship programs, and supportive structures to promote equity and inclusivity for female seafarers. The research aims to explore the factors influencing women's career decisions and advancement in the cruise industry, as well as the primary challenges they face. The study involved online interviews with five women working in the cruise industry, using purposive sampling. The findings reveal that women have different perspectives on career decisions and strategies for advancement in this sector. Overcoming challenges in career advancement requires addressing workplace dynamics, workload management, health and safety concerns, and biases against women. Despite these obstacles, the women in the study demonstrate resilience and motivation to thrive in the industry. Encouraging aspiring women seafarers to pursue careers in the cruise industry can be achieved through professional training courses, higher education opportunities, and mentorship connections. Ensuring equal opportunities for career advancement and undestanding the unique needs of women seafarers are essential for fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. By listening to the experiences and perspectives of women in the industry, we can gain insights into the challenges they face and work towards creating a more equitable and empowering environment at all.
