Sail to Survive: A Cross-Generational Difference in Crew Work-Life Balance and Its Impact on Work Commitment in the Hospitality Industry

Abstract
The study investigated the cross-generational work-life balance, work-related experiences, and their impact on work commitment within the cruise industry. It primarily aims to gain a deeper understanding of how crew members manage the complexities of balancing their professional and personal lives while at sea. This study employed a qualitative research approachm utilizing the descriptive approach to explore various key aspects of three generations: Gen Z, Millennials (Gen Y), and Gen X. It examined the demographic characteristics of the participants and investigated the lived experiences of multi-generational cruise ship crew members on how they handle work-life situations and overcome challenges and factors that hinder their ability to maintain equilibrium. Irregular responsibilities with personal life is also a focal point. Furthermore, the study explored the experiences faced by crew members during their cruise assignments and how these experiences influenced their job performance. However, the strategies adopted by the crew workers how influence their work-life balance and their long-term work commitments on the cruise ship.
Additionally, the research assessed the positive impact of maintaining a harmonious work-life situation on the mental and physical health of crew members.
This research addressed an often-overlooked aspect of the cruise industry, providing valuable insights for future hospitality professionals and contributing to the overall well-being of crew members. The study's findings are expected to shed light on the intricate interplay of commitment, work-life balance, and life on the high seas in the cruise industry.
