INVESTIGATING MARITIME SECURITY STRATEGIES: BASIS ON PREPARING MSEUF MARITIME STUDENTS TO MODERN CYBER ATTACKS
Area of Research
Abstract
This research focused on maritime security strategies, particularly in preparing maritime
students to address modern cyber-attacks onboard ships. It examined various theories,
assumptions, and frameworks to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to resist
and respond to cyber threats effectively. Through structured interviews with seafarers, the study
analyzed the effectiveness of cybersecurity measures and identified challenges faced by those at
sea. By assessing the frequency of cyber-attacks and their contributing factors, the researchaimed to provide comprehensive insights and solutions. The study emphasized the importance of
integrating cybersecurity training into maritime education and promoting best practices. It
supported ongoing evaluation and collaboration to enhance cybersecurity resilience in maritime
operations. By identifying errors in existing cybersecurity measures, the study proposed methods
to better prepare maritime students against cyber-attacks. Data from interviews and questionnaires formed the basis for these recommendations, aiming to improve cybersecurity readiness in the maritime industry and foster collaborative efforts. Based on interviews with experienced seafarers, the study highlighted key tactics such as regular cybersecurity exercises, awareness of phishing links, and strict bans on using personal devices on ship computers. Seafarers emphasized the significance of these practices in maintaining the security of ship communications and operations. The report stressed the need for continous cybersecurity education and training, suggesting that these topics be included in maritime educate programs. Seafarers confirmed the effectiveness of these measures, remarking on successful advance of cyber threats and the presence of cybersecurity personnel to provide regular training and handle specific situations like GPS spoofing. The study concluded that, even though cyberattacks are rare, maritime safety relies on awareness and up-to-date security procedures.
