A Prototype Design of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine for Generation of Electricity in portions of Maharlika Highway in Barangay Ibabang Dupay Lucena City

Abstract
This Project Study is about the design of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine that has the
following Objectives: (a) To design a vertical axis wind turbine to generate electricity in
Maharlika Highway in Barangay Ilaya at Ibabang Dupay Lucena City; (b) To fabricate a
prototype of the designed vertical axis wind turbine; and (c) To test and evaluate the
prototype in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and functionality.
The design procedure used in this project study are as follows: (1) Gathering data that includes observing the current situation of Maharlika Highway in Brgy. Ilaya and Ibabang Dupay, Lucena City and the relevance of the components needed in the study: (2)
The design of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine which includes designing the Main Components. Rotor, Gear - Set, and the Basa Frame, respectively; (3) Fabricating the Prototype is achieved by using different Machineshop Process like Cutting, Bending, and Welding, this includes assembling the components together; and (4) Testing and Evaluating the VAWT to rate the prototype in terms of its Efficiency, Effectiveness and Functionality.
Gathering the required data in the area, the researchers found out that the highway can be very dangerous for the drivers and local residents due to insufficient lighting, From the outcomes of the pre - survey and interviews, the researchers come up a solution for the beneficiaries to see the road at night, that is to utilize the available wind speeds produced by fast running vehicles in the highway by placing Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) on center islands to generate electricity. These wind turbines can be used to supply electricity to streetlights. The wind turbine will consist of blades that is mounted on a shaft where at the bottom end, a generator is installed in mesh by a set of Gears. The advantagge of vertical axis wind turbine is it can generate power in all direction of wind flow. Other advantages will be that the maintenance is less nad the height of the turbine is less. Wind energy is very much eco-friendly very compactable and sustainable.
To further develop and improve this Project Study, the researchers recommend use light, durable and non - corrosive materials on the Wind Turbine to have minimal maintenance and a long fatigue life. For the Future Researchers, search for new designs of wind turbines. Use advance technology to fabricate the prototype to further develop and improve the study of wind energy.
