Genre Analysis of ELT Academic Blogs
Area of Research
Abstract
The study analyzed the genre of ELT academic blogs to help avoid confusion and
misinformation from the data the reader gathered from the internet. This paper aims to describe
the social, ideational, and structural features of the text following the relevant theories cited in
this study. Swales' Theory (1990) on genre analysis will be the basis of this study. It was limited
to analyzing the (1.) general characteristics of the author (2.1) lexico-grammatical features, (2.2)
discourse features, and (2.3) cognitive structuring of the text. This paper used the descriptive
qualitative method in analyzing the genre of academic blogs in the field of ELT. By using
descriptive qualitative approaches (such as genre analysis), ELT blogs are explored more fully.
Researchers used genre analysis to analyze qualitative data, identifying patterns, themes, or
relationships within the collected information. Findings revealed that the ELT academic blogs are generally single-authored by females as the majority of writers. it has a strong international presence and influence and most of the authors use their full name with graphical representation. In terms of lexicogrammatical features, it shapes the academic blog as a medium that is both richly expressive and meticulously precise, catering to an audience that value depth of information, clarity of argument, and rigor in thought and expression. Likewise, the discourse analysis of academic blogs shows a systematic method that emphasizes logical organization - beginning with an introduction and moving on to useful tactics and convincing arguments. Moreover, the cognitive structuring of academic blogs arranges thematically from introduction to conclusion to convey ideas to the reader effectively. Recommendations were drawn based on the findings and a writing guide for an academic blog was developed.
