LEADERS AT SEA: LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES OF THE FORMER MARITIME STUDENT LEADERS OF MANUEL S. ENVERGA UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION
Abstract
The study investigated leadership competencies among former maritime student leaders from Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation(MSEUF), assessing both employer and former leader perspectives. Using a mixed-method approach, it surveyed four former leaders and 40 employees from associated shipping companies. Data analysis included demographic profiles, leadership abilities and the impact of student leadership on work performance. Key findings revealed that former leaders, predominantly male, began their careers in their early twenties and held various maritime roles. Their participation in student organizations facilitated valuable skills such as planning, interpersonal relations, and effective communication, which were crucial for their future careers. Employers valued attributes like punctuality, trust-building, and collaboration, acknowledging the importance of leadership skills in maritime careers. however, former leaders faced challenges like homesickness and limited opportunities to utilize their leadership skills to maritime students for successful careers and suggests further research on their impact on organizational dynamics and employee satisfaction.
