RISK COMMUNICATION AMONG RESIDENTS IN FLOOD-PRONE AREAS IN LUCENA CITY

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the risk communication to the residents in flood prone areas in Lucena City. It specifically seek to identify the demographic profile of respondents; level of awareness in flood-prone areas in Lucena City; risk communication strategies used by the Local Government Unit in giving information to the public; the respondents' perception by the used of risk communication in preventing hazards in terms of medium used, content, credibility; respondents suggestion to improved risk communication of Local Government Unit. Using descriptive research method, a total of one hundred (100) residents from Lucena City were selected as respondents to this study. The data collected from quantitative approach were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistic such as frequency, percentage, and weighted mean. The results showed that participants in the study get about risk information from barangay through Local Government Unit's dissemination and most participants are more aware of risk results than emergency announcements. Yet, disaster risk communication content is effective for residents. The findings suggest that Local Government Unit should use a local communication channel and consider disaster victims' opinions.
