Exploring the Perceived Influence of TikTok on the psychological Well-being and Learning Achievement of Students

Abstract

This study sought to explore the perceived influence of TikTok on the psychological well-being and learning achievement of students to propose a psychoeducation program. This study looked into the demographic characteristics of the respondents; the level of their exposure to TikTok; the perceived influence of TikTok on their psychological well-being in terms of social relationships/interactions, body-image, and self-esteem; the perceived influence of TikTok on their learning achievement when grouped according to their demographic characteristics. The researcher employed a mixed-method research design specifically sequential explanatory design. This study was conducted on the four state colleges and universities in Lopez, Quezon. Utilizing a systematic stratified sampling, the study consisted of three hundred fifty-two(352) college students from different state colleges and universities . Based on the results, most of the respondents were 19 years old, and there was almost an equal distribution between female and male respondents. The findings of the research suggest that while TikTok provides benefits for social interaction, enhancement of Body image and self-worth, and access to additional educational resources, it also poses challenges and potential negative consequences. Moreover, a significant difference exists in the perceived influence of TikTok on the psychological well-being when grouped according to their year level and college/university. Overall, it is recommended by the researcher that the continuous endeavors from educational institutions, families, and communities are crucial in guiding students on the utilization of the TikTok app and other comparable social media platforms, to foster healthy usage and reduce adverse repercussions.
