KOMIKS: EFFECTIVENESS OF ONLINE COMIC STRIPS IN PROMOTING POLITICAL AWARENESS AS PERCEIVED BY SELECTED MSEUF COLLEGE STUDENTS

Abstract
The study aims to determine the effectiveness of online comic strips in promoting
political awareness as perceived by selected college students of MSEUF. Specifically, it
seeks to identify the level of exposure of online comic strips used as a medium for
political awareness; the level effectiveness of online comic strips in promoting political
awareness in terms of theme, characters, setting, and style; the content analysis of the
online comic strips in terms of: theme, characters, setting, and style; and the perceived
impact of online comics strips used in promoting political awareness to the MSEUF
college students. The study also did a content analysis of twenty (20) online comic
strips of Tarantadong Kalbo in terms of caption, panels, speech balloon/bubbles. Using
descriptive survey method specifically, survey method. 100 MSEUF students are
selected from the locale that has prior knowledge and familiarization. Frequency,
percentage, and weighted mean is used as statistical treatment.
Results revealed that the respondents see comic strips a few times. Facebook is
their most common social media platform when seeing online comic strips. Furthermore, comedy is the most read and seen genre of online comic strips by the respondents.The
effectiveness of online comic strips are strongly agreed upon by the respondents in
terms of theme and character, while setting and style are agreed. As for content of
online comic strips perceive by the MSEUF college students, the participants agreed
that theme, character, setting, and style are the content for political online comic strips.
The impact of online comic strips after reading political online comic strips are strongly
agreed. Tarantadong Kalbo’s comic strip captions contains humour rather than being
informative, the panels shows the realistic aspect of the content, and speech
balloon/bubble are explicit that there is no filter or hesitation in the words used in the comic strips.
