USE OF DIGITAL STORYTELLING FOR COMMUNITY EXTENSION SERVICES PROGRAM AS PERCEIVED BY SELECTED STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS IN MANUEL S. ENVERGA UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION

Abstract
This research determined the effectiveness of digital storytelling for community
extension services programs among selected student organizations in Manuel S.
Enverga University Foundation. Specifically, it aimed to identify the methods used by
the student organizations in promoting their community extension services program.
Their level of awareness to digital storytelling were determined. Their perception on the
effectiveness of digital storytelling were evaluated in terms of student engagement,
stakeholder involvement and beneficiaries’ exposure. Moreover, challenges perceived in
the use of digital storytelling were also be identified.
A combination of qualitative and quantitative research with designs and methods
of descriptive approach were applied in this study. A total of 8 student organization
presidents were chosen through convenience sampling and invited for a focus group
discussion (FGD). On the other hand, 100 student organization members were selected
through simple random sampling and asked to answer the survey questionnaire form.
For the group discussion, it was via Zoom video conferencing application while the
survey was answered via Google Information form. They were allowed to comment and
answer the questions as subjects and respondents of the study. After gathering the necessary information, thematic analysis for the qualitative method while statistical
analysis specifically the weighted mean were used for the quantitative method to
interpret and come up with the desired results for the study.
Based on the findings derived from the gathered data, the researcher therefore
concludes that Facebook is the most used site in promoting the community extension
services program of both participants. Majority of the respondents and the subjects use
poster as a method for promotion which shows that most of the student organizations
adapted into digital media. Both of the participants from survey questionnaire and focus
group discussion were very much aware on digital storytelling. They perceived it as
something new and an opportunity to create a content in a creative way. However, they
are not fully aware on the duration of digital storytelling which must not be more than 10
minutes. Furthermore, the participants view digital storytelling as an effective way in
promoting community extension services program. In terms of student engagement, the
content of digital storytelling can make an organization to think creatively. Additionally,
digital stories posted in online page reinforce collaboration among stakeholders.
Moreover, it can create a better understanding on how the beneficiaries could be
supported by interested groups. With regards to the challenges in the use of digital
storytelling majority of the subjects and participants expressed that the different
interpretation of the viewers to the output can lead to certain problems.
