ASSESSMENT ON THE PERSONAL-SOCIAL, ACADEMIC AND CAREER NEEDS OF K TO 12 STUDENTS: A BASIS FOR AN ENHANCED COMPREHENSIVE AND DEVELOPMENTAL GUIDANCE PROGRAM

Abstract

Guidance is a fundamental aspect of an educational institution that is centered directly on its functions. Its services help and prepare students to understand themselves before their developmental needs. This study assessed the developmental needs of the K-12 students of the Basic Education Department. Respondents in this study include 175 students, 173 parents, and 42 teachers who completed the self-made survey questionnaire derived from the downloadable ASCA National Standards for Students and The National Standards for School Counseling Programs in the Philippines that are available online. The self-made survey questionnaire was reviewed and validated by the experts that elicit the respondents' perceptions about the functions and services of guidance and counseling, perceptions about the developmental needs of students according to the 3 domains—academic, career, and personal-social. Data were collected and analyzed using percentage, weighted mean, ANOVA, and t-test. Results indicate that students, teachers, and parent strongly agreed about the fundamental functions of guidance services. It is concluded that there is enough evidence to say that students, parents, and teachers have significantly different perceptions of the academic and career development needs of students. Meanwhile, the personal-social needs to arrive for not rejecting the null hypothesis. This means that there is not enough evidence to say that students, parents, and teachers have significantly different perceptions of student personal-social development needs. Hence, enhanced the guidance programs and services in the Basic Education Department by providing additional activities based on the three developmental needs of the students is recommended.
