USE OF PROBLEM – BASED LEARNING AS PERCEIVED BY GRADE 9 STUDENTS OF A NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the use of problem – based learning as perceived by the Grade 9 students with respect to attitude, skills development and knowledge acquisition in Burdeos National High School. The respondents of the study were the selected 140 grade 9 students for the school year 2020 - 2021. Descriptive survey method was used in this study to find out the difference among grade 9 students perception about the use of problem – based learning. Survey questionnaire was the main data gathering instrument of this study. Frequency/Percentage Distribution and ANOVA were used as a statistical treatment. The findings of the study revealed that majority of the student-respondents belong to the ages ranging from 13-15 years old, mostly are female. Results also revealed that respondents have agreed on the indicators measuring problem-based learning with respect to attitude and knowledge acquisition while respondents have neutral perception on the indicators measuring problem-based learning with respect to skill development. It was also found out that there is no significant difference on the perception of respondents about problem-based learning with respect to attitude and knowledge acquisition when grouped by sex while there is a significant difference on the perception of respondents about problem-based learning with respect to skills development when grouped by sex. However, it was also revealed that there is a significant difference on the perception of respondents about problem-based learning with respect to skills development and knowledge acquisition when grouped by age while there is no significant difference on the perception of respondents about problem-based learning with respect to attitude when grouped by age. On the other hand, the results revealed that there is no significant difference on the perception of respondents about problem-based learning with respect to attitude and knowledge acquisition when grouped by average grade in math while there is a significant difference on the perception of respondents about problem-based learning with respect to skills development when grouped by average grade in math. The results of the study served as the bases for designing an action and school activities to enhance the use of problem – based learning as perceived by the students.
