IMPACT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON SUSTAINABILITY AMONG STRANDED SEAFARERS

Completed2023

Abstract

Clapping for essential workers on suburban streets cannot be heard at sea, where hundreds of thousands of crew members are stranded on ships they can’t leave, risking their lives to put food on citizen’s plates. But as the pandemic continues, the sustainability and well-being of crews are under threat, imperiling the global economic recovery from COVID-19. Some 200,000 seafarers are now impacted, with some being forced to work beyond the end of their contracts, and that figure could as much as double as new COVID variants arise and government restrictions keep them from going home as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the fragility of global supply chains as seafarers continue to endure tremendous, and yet largely invisible, hardship and suffering. This research paper aimed to determine the impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on stranded Filipino seafarers working onboard in terms of human sustainability, social sustainability, economic sustainability, and environmental sustainability. This research paper utilized 5 seafarers who had been stranded even if it impacted their well-being and sustainability plan aspects.
