COMPLIANCE OF SEAFARERS TO THE PREVENTION OF POLLUTION BY GARBAGE POLICY

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the compliance of seafarers to the prevention of pollution by garbage policy in the Region of IV - CALABARZON. Specifically, this paper aimed to investigate the level of compliance of the seafarers in the implementing rules to prevent pollution by garbage from ships, their level of awareness of the health and environmental effects of vessels' emission of pollution, and determine the significant relationship between the respondents’ level of compliance of seafarers in implementing rules to prevent pollution by garbage from ships and their level of awareness on the effects of vessels’ emission of pollution. The study is a quantitative study that utilized descriptive surveys and correlational type of research. The respondents of the study were fifty (50) seafarers in the Province of Quezon and Batangas City which was sampled through the quota sampling method. A self–devised research instrument was used in the data gathering. It was revealed that the seafarers’ ship owners and vessels were compliant with implementing rules to prevent pollution by garbage from ships. The findings likewise revealed that respondents agreed that seafarers are aware of the human health and environmental effects of pollution from ships. There is a significant relationship between the respondents’ level of compliance of seafarers in implementing rules to prevent pollution by garbage from ships and their level of awareness of the effects of vessels’ pollution. There is no significant difference in the seafarers’ compliance with garbage policy when grouped to the respondents’ demographic profile.
