Hyflex Learning: Learning Preferences and Challenges of the Maritime Students in the Now Normal
Area of Research
Abstract
Hyflex is a mode of teaching and learning that has been adopted in a post-pandemic era. In
the service of intended learning objectives, Hyflex learning integrates complementary face-toface (synchronous) and online learning (asynchronous) experiences. The students come up
with ways to understand the lessons and topics through their flexibility and convenience. The
purpose of the study aimed to identify the problems that occurred during the now normal and
analyze the learning preferences of CME students. The demographic profile of the students was
determined and problems they are encountered in this hyflex learning. Lastly, how do these
problems affect them in terms of education, financial capabilities, and Mental and Physical
Health? This study used a quantitative approach to research and used a descriptive method to
describe the quantitative result of this study. The questionnaire survey technique was used to
collect primary data. Random sampling has been chosen for this study. The results indicate that
the majority of the participants who completed the research survey fell within the age range of
18 to 20 years, with a significant portion being in their 3rd year of study. Given the maledominated nature of maritime schools, it follows that the respondents in this study were
predominantly male. Additionally, in terms of academic programs, a larger proportion of students
were enrolled in BS Marine Transportation as opposed to BS Marine Engineering. Moreover, the
prevailing learning preference among maritime students during the "Now Normal" period is to
study in a quite place. In addition researchers identified problems and impacts on students'
education, financial capabilities, physical health, and mental health. Education, internet issues affected their ability to keep up with classes. Financially, on-ground classes proved costlier,
leading to borrowed funds for school fees. Mentally, lack of motivation hindered physical
attendance and caused sleep difficulties. Physically, insufficient eye rest led to exhaustion
during on-ground classes
