Seafarers’ Job Displacement and Earnings Loss: Evidence from the Displaced Workers of Selected Passenger Ships in the Philippines due to Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Covid has caused bedlam and frenzy all around the world causing the stopping of all typical everyday exercises like going to work, a stroll outside, or in certain nations in any event, venturing a foot outside the house. One of the exercises that have additionally been significantly affected because of the spread of this sickness is the transportation and oceanic industry. This plague has made the delivery and sea industry face the most noticeably awful conditions as the labor force in these areas have been closed down for the well-being and avoidance of the heightening of COVID-19. This is one of the reasons why the researchers sought to determine the seafarers job displacement and earnings loss: evidence from the displaced workers of selected passenger ships in the Philippines due to covid -19 pandemic. The study used descriptive research design. A questionnaire has been designed, to know the (1) demographic profile in terms of age, gender, rank, and years of service; (2) feelings and how affected they are when they experienced Job Displacement and Earning Loss; (3) their experiences of Mental Breakdown. The survey was conducted online through google forms. A descriptive-quantitative research design was used in this study to aid the interpretation of gathered data with a survey questionnaire as a main tool for gathering data. Descriptive research aims to accurately and systematically describe a population, situation, or phenomenon. Results show that job displacement and earning loss affected the mental stability of the respondent's cases, which made them lack sleep and reduce their sleeping time to a total of 4-6 hours of limit. In the occurring case of displaced workers of seafarers of selected passenger ships in the Philippines due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the respondents lose motivation to seek another job and/ or even continue what they are professional in.
