INTERACTION OF FILIPINO SEAFARERS WITH FOREIGN CREWS ONBOARD: IMPLICATION TO THEIR CULTURAL BELIEFS AND WORK PRACTICES

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the challenges faced by Filipino seafarers in the maritime industry. It specifically sought to identify the common problems encountered by Filipino seafarers in terms of language barrier and cultural diversity with foreign crew mates onboard and how Filipino seafarers deal with foreign Crew Members onboard in terms of work practices and interaction/approach. The major instrument used for collecting data was by the quantitative descriptive survey method. Fifty (50) Filipino seafarers who have experience on board, have been the respondents. The questionnaire was given online and conducted by using online resources to gather data for this study. The data collected had been analyzed through the use of frequency, percentage, and weighted mean as statistical treatment.Results revealed that most Filipino Seafarers that work onboard internationally are Roman Catholic and the foreign Crew Members that they have worked with are mostly Asian and European people. The results also revealed that the difficulties that Filipino seafarers encounter are their own confidence interfering while interacting with Foreign Crew Members onboard, Filipino Seafarers are unable to identify their Cultural Practices and lastly, Filipino seafarers are not fluent with foreign language which decreases their interaction efficiency. The results also revealed that despite the difficulties that Filipino Seafarers encounter, they always try to be more comfortable around new environments and foreign Crew Members onboard to have a better working result.
