Area of Research
Abstract
The main objective of the study is to trace the current job of the maritime engineering students who graduated in the school year 2016-2018 in Southern Tagalog. It sought to determine the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, income bracket and occupation. Moreover, this study answered the employment data of the maritime engineering graduates who are employed and unemployed, the reasons for being unemployed, present occupation, status in their present occupation and their current salary.
The study revealed that the majority of the respondents are millennials. It was deduced that the majority of the mariners in the Philippines aged between 23 to 38. Moreover, the majority of the marine engineering graduates for the school year 2016-2017 were male. This can be concluded that marine engineering courses are more preferred by males rather than females. Further, the majority of the respondents had a monthly income of 30, 000.00 and above which means that the marine engineering course is one of the best courses that can give a fair income to the family. Furthermore, the majority of the graduates practiced jobs in maritime industry while other graduates went to business and government sectors. The study showed that after graduation, the majority of the respondents graduated from different sectors to earn money which can be concluded that the institution developed a competent graduate even if they went to other fields. On the same hand, the majority of the BS Marine Engineering passed the MARINA Examination and became licensed mariners. The study also revealed that the common reason for being unemployed as perceived by mariners was the limited job vacancies in the company while there were more applicants applying for the limited positions. Secondly, some graduates cannot enter the maritime industry due to medical-related reasons. This means that some of the graduates have problems in their medical and that is one of the reasons for being unemployed in their chosen career. The third reason for being unemployed was the shifting of the company which means that there is a rotation in the job which resulted in job generalization.
