Bachelor of Science in Accountancy Student’s Involvement in Community Outreach Activities: A Tool in Promoting Student Learning and Values Formation
Area of Research
Abstract
Educational systems in the Philippines incorporated community outreach activities in the curriculum for students to understand the community's condition and recognize their responsibility as part of such a community. The study aimed to investigate the learning and value
formation of the student when involved in community outreach activities. This research used descriptive-quantitative approach. A total of 457 responses from accountancy students nationwide were collected by which personal and activity-related profiles were obtained. Upon performing a statistical treatment, results show that the participation in community outreach activities is reflective of acquired affective learning related to understanding the purpose of community outreach activities and improved awareness of the situations within the community. These imply that values adhered and formed in the involvement to these programs were developed in the organizations and institutions which were considered core values and community service involvement. Both of these variables, when grouped according to respondents' profiles, not including age and the average number of participation in the community outreach activities, were evident to have significant differences. Furthermore, personal characteristics obtained were determined to have a significant correlation between acquired affective learning and values formation, suggesting a positive and direct correlation between the variables. These findings are believed to be helpful to students, organizations, and other institutions to understand the available medium for affective learning and values formation in the involvement in community outreach activities.
